Effects of p-cholorophenylalanine Pretreatment on High Pressure Oxygen Induced Convulsion in Rats

Abstract
It has been reported that the high pressure oxygen(OHP) exerts convulsion in rats. But, its central neural mechanism is not clear. Recently, serotonergic nervous system was related on high pressure oxygen induced con
vulsion. Therefore, the present
study
was performed to verify the action of the central serotoneric system on high pressure oxygen induced convulsion by means of p-chorolphenylalanin(PCPA) that has been known to block tryptophan hydroxylase activity. Rats were intraperitoneally
injected
with PCPA at a concentration of 150mg/kg and than fasted for 24 hours with free access of water.
@ES The results obtained summarized as followings:
@EN 1. PCPA significantly shortened on high pressure oxygen(OHP) induced convulsion time.
2. PCPA profoundly decreased the serotonin and 5-HIAA contents in whole brain, but norepinephrine and dopamine levels were not altered.
3. The levels of serotonin, 5-HIAA and dopamine in rats whole brain were markedly elevated by OHP, however, norepinephrine content was decreased.
4. Serum serotonin level was elevated by OHP in both control group and PCPA treated group.
Therefore, it is concluded from the present study that OHP-induced covulsion may be correlated with the central serotonergic system and other monoaminergic system.
